Lawman of Prairie Dog Flats

New York
Sean O'Malley was a tough cop.. He was an impressive figure in his frock coat of navy blue single breasted, a rolling collar, and nine buttons on the breast blue pantaloons. The coat had to be buttoned at all times .1876 Brooklyn was tough city to be a police man. Sean met the dregs of society, pimps, whores, sneak thieves and every other miserable human being. He was a large man, second generation Irish whose boyish looks charmed the ladies and whose toughness and determination brought admiration from men. Sean had a passion for the Wild West, which he read about in dime novels by Ned Buntline. He even joined a riding club and was even quite good on horseback. He was undefeated on the police boxing team. His other passion was Ellie Buchanan his fiancĂ©. Ellie was a petite lady with a fiery temper and who slipped into curses when really aggravated. She was the daughter of Captain Buchanan Sean's superior. Captain Buchanan did not like Sean. Sean was everything The Captain wasn't. A loud mouth drunkard who never did more then he had to. Captain Buchanan did not like the way Sean was so tough on the people he arrested, bringing them in walking or unconscious. Sean had a theory, you break the law you must be punished. He did not tolerate anything on his beat as a patrolman. Complaints against him kept him from any rank and caused the Captain to do more paperwork. Captain Buchanan hated paper work. But Sean was an angel of mercy when it came to the unfortunate. If you stole for food to survive or for your kids, panhandle for a few pennies Sean would help you out. One night Sean and Ellie had a huge fight with Ellie who told him she had seen her mother suffer because the job got to her father and he drank his meager pay away. She wanted him to give up his dreams of going west, quit his job and get a desk job. She told him she did not want to live on his eight hundred dollars a year patrolman pay .Sean told her he was sick of arguing. Ellie unleashed a torrent of words Sean only heard in the many saloons on his beat. That was the night they broke off the engagement. Things got worse at the precinct station. Captain Buchanan had Sean come to his office before he went on patrol. I knew she would see through the you patrolman, She wanted to raise a family and your not the man for it. Sean was getting mad and retorted “Your daughter swears worst then a Barbary pirate, no one will marry her.” The only way she is going to have babies is to steal them." He went up close to the captain and could smell the whiskey on his breath. I said "Don't let anyone get too close to you with an open flame you will explode.” Sean knew how to push the limits. "You Asshole!" the captain said, you better watch your step, and I will be watching you like a mother hen." You wanted to get on the mounted Patrol; I'll have your badge first." One more complaint and I will go to the superintendent if I have to." Sean turned before he did something he would regret.
Sean tried to keep out of trouble. He had read in the a dime novel he was reading of a need sheriff in a place called Prairie Dog Flats , which was south east of Dodge city in Ford County Kansas. It was near the Arkansas River and a few miles from Fort Dodge. The add read, Position available for the right man. The town’s people of prairie Dog flat has decided to hire a new sheriff. The town is growing having a population of near 200 souls .We need a peace officer with experience to handle our expanding community. The salary is six hundred dollars a year, the vitals are supplied though, and we have a couple of fine places selling grub. Send all inquiries to Fort Dodge Kansas and they will see to it we get the post. Sean was all excited when he went home and drafted a letter and even more when he went to the postal office and had it sent. The weeks that followed he walked softly through his assigned area hoping his reputation would keep things quiet. Then one day he went into the post office and there it was a letter from Fort Dodge. Dear Mr. O’Malley it read, we have selected you to hire for the position sheriff in Prairie Dog Flats the sheriff we have will stay on until you get here, come over to the mayor’s office and we can talk. I will show you around the town and discuss your responsibilities. The Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe railway now goes to Dodge City in Ford county due to the cattleman and their needs, The Train goes on to Fort Dodge but in Dodge City you can outfit yourself with a horse and saddle . You can buy the gear you need there. You can hire someone to come with you here for maybe five dollars. .And it was signed William Soares Mayor Prairie Dog Flats. I was excited, now I could rid myself of Captain Buchanan and put miles between myself and his bitch of a daughter. On My last day on the job I got in a fight. It was with the brother of a councilor, who told me to mind my business when I found him slapping around a known prostitute. He asked me “Don’t you know who my brother is? You better run along. When I grabbed his arm he spit in my face, I gave him a round house right hand and broke his jaw. Captain Buchanan was so angry I could not understand him; He said he was going to have me fired. I told him I quit and I would not have to work for an asshole like him and not see his asshole of a daughter anymore. He took a swing at me and I shoved him so hard he went over his desk and ended in a pile. Two patrolmen came in but decided it would be better to take their elsewhere. I heard that there was an arrest warrant to be served on me in the next few days but I knew no one would have the nerve to serve it, though I wished the captain would get liquored up enough to try. I made my decision that night. I would go to Prairie Dog Flats. He had too taken several trains; after switching train a couple of times I finally was on the correct train to Dodge City Kansas. I was amazed how many miles of Barron country I saw. I reached the railhead of Dodge City on a sultry day in April of 76. After getting off the train he saw an amazing site. Just like in the dime novels, he was in his dream.
Dodge City

People stared at me when I walked on Front Street with my derby hat and fine suit. I decided I needed a change of clothes. I saw a mercantile store sandwiched between a couple of saloons and entered the premises. There seemed to be all the gear I would need inside. The proprietor was a portly man with a grey handle bar mustache, I introduced myself and he said his name we Bob. I said “Bob we need to do business and get me out of these city duds. I bought 3 sets of shirts, pants and a great looking sombrero to keep the sun out of my eyes. I told him I was to be sheriff of Prairie Dog Flats. He said “Oh, that shit hole!" "Well I guess I should sell you a pistol and a gun belt, not that you will need it except for shooting prairie Dogs" With that he started laughing. “Don’t mind me son, the cattlemen all come here and don’t even know where that place is. There are a couple of cattle ranches there but they bring everything there cattle and business here also. You might get some saddle tramps or rowdy cow punchers that take the wrong road but suppose it is going to grow along with the rest of us." He helped me pick out a firearm; it was a single action army 44-40 caliber. I like it because of the four and three quarter inch barrel which would not be cumbersome. I figured if I needed a longer barrel I would use a rifle. He sold me a gun belt and holster which I tried on and it was comfortable. Sean said "I will take a couple of boxes of cartridges so I can practice a little." Bob replied sarcastically “I guess you will need plenty with all those little doggies!" “Is there anything else?" He told him he would pay for that and asked where he could get a horse and saddle. Bob advised him to go to the blacksmith he has fine horses he has from cowboys down on their luck in gambling at the saloons , and a few nags if you want to save on money. Sean figured he would not show up on his new job on a horse with no teeth was shown the way to the blacksmiths, When he got there he noticed a man talking to the blacksmith. Sean introduced himself to the blacksmith and told him what he required. The other man, who was almost as tall as he and had a barrel chest upon which was a badge which said sheriff asked whets your business in town, I told him about my traveling to prairie Dog Flats. "I am Sheriff Charles Bassett” he said. “I am glad to meet a fellow law dog.” I was over to prairie dog just last week to visit my cousin." Sean asked “what’s the town like?" Sheriff Basset went on about prairie Dog saying it was fairly quiet place , "Doesn't have as many saloons as Dodge does so that cuts down some of the trouble. " "You need to watch out or Pug Ugly though. We have a lot of cowboys interested in cattle drives in Dodge and prairie Dog sometimes have a few misfits from them going there. Saddle bums and outlaws on the run sometime go to small towns to hide out and Prairie Dog is no exception” Sean asked " What about the sheriff they have that I am replacing?" Charlie replied “oh! That would be Old Joe miller." He is as useless as he can be." He doesn't want to enforce the law and drinks all day". Sean said “I know someone like that, bringing up memories of his old nemesis Captain Buchanan. Charlie added that he doesn't let the deputy he has wear a gun and has him doing chores around the jailhouse. They had a shooting there a couple of months ago and the sheriff not only did not respond but they found him in one of his cells sleeping off corn whiskey. The tramp that shot a cowpoke went about the town shooting in the air until a saloon owner came out and blasted him with a shotgun he kept under the bar. After that the sheriff’s days were numbered. The blacksmith brought over a fine looking mustang; He had put a saddle on it with a rifle in the scabbard. There was a cowhide rope also. “Seventy five dollars and I will throw in the saddle and gear!" My money was going fast, but it was a fine horse and with the gear thrown in a good deal. “Sold he said." Sheriff Bassett said come on over to the last chance saloon and I will buy you a drink and I can make some directions to prairie Dog. “How many saloons do you have in Dodge Sean asked?” Nineteen." Charlie replied. Saloon had a long bar and there must have been twenty cowpokes and what appeared to be trappers standing at it. There was a long mirror behind the bar and a man with a full beard behind it. To tables were in the room and I could see a couple of card games in progress. What's your pleasure the barkeep asked. Sean requested a beer. The Barman said we have ice you know!" That was a pleasant surprise and Sean said "Sure!” Sheriff Bassett said to give him the usual and a glass and a bottle were put on the bar. It was five cents for the beer and twenty five cents for the bottle of corn whiskey. Charlie told me that he came in here as the other saloons had a dance hall and whores and he did not want to have to thump someone when he was relaxing. He obtained a pencil and a sheet of paper from the barman and made a map. He told Sean it was 20 miles south of Fort Dodge and not to worry about the Indians because it has been quiet as of late with a few of the redskins stealing beef or horse. “Hell we hang them as soon as we catch them, Guilty or not." He gave a wink. Sean spent the night at the Dodge House, not to fancy but he did not see any vermin. The next day he put on his new clothes and gun belt. He gave fifty cents to the proprietor and went to the blacksmiths. “How much for the hay and feed for the animal he asked. The Blacksmith said “No charge fella!" Maybe if I am in prairie Dog you can by me a meal." Sean notice a canteen had been put on the saddle horn. He felt it and it was full. “I would have forgotten to get one '" The blacksmith smiled and said” I know." They shook hands and Sean mounted the mustang. As he trotted out of town he Saw Sheriff Bassett and a couple of what must have been his deputies struggling with a Mexican and Charlie whacked him with a small club, which ended the battle.

Prairie Dog Flats

it took Sean three days to reach Prairie Dog Flats. When he saw it from a hill he was on the anticipation was swelling in his chest. He rode into the town; it was small to be sure. He rode up to a building with the sign that said prairie Dog Hotel. He tied his horse to the rail outside the hotel with three other horses. It was early in the morning and few could be seen on the street. The structure was three stories and the wood looked like it had seen better days. A slim man was asleep in a small chair by the door and when I walked in he awoke and stood up. Sean asked where he could find the Mayor. The man said his house is the white house with the white fence a half mile to the south of this very spot. Sean said thank you and went back out to his horse. He rode south until he saw the white house which looked freshly painted. He tied his horse up the rail in front, opened the gate and walked up to the door. He gave the door a couple of raps. A minute went by and the door opened and a plump woman in her fifties looked up at me and said “You sure are a big one." Sean told her he was the new Sheriff and wanted to see the mayor. "Thank the saints you are here." she said. She led me into a room that had fine linen on the tables and everything was clean and tidy. She left and a stout man with mutton chop whiskers. He said "You must be Sean, Glad to meet you." He offered his hand to shake. Sean shook his hand and noticed a little grimace from the mayor. “Sorry Mayor.” He replied "You sure are a strong one, and you can call me Bill out of Town meetings." Why don't you stay and have some breakfast. Go over to the prairie Dog Hotel and they have baths, take some of that trail dust off, and tell George I sent you. It would be a fine place to stay on the town until we can set you up in the Sheriffs office, after that you can pay the bill or stay at the jail. Sean told him his funds were getting low so he would take him up on the offer but after he would be staying at the jail until he could afford a better place. They sat at a table and the woman, I found out her name was Tilley brought out plates of eggs bits of ham. Coffee followed. The Mayor told him about the town. “We have about three hundred and fifty people living in the town; we have three saloons, a general store, and a school house which also serves for town and church meetings. We have blacksmith and a doctor who lives north of the town. A cattle Ranch ten miles from the town to the west that has been bringing more cowhands to us, not like Dodge but we are growing. There are two hotels and you have been to the Prairie Dog. Stage coach line is planning to stop here soon. There is a bank under construction and that is one reason we need a sheriff with experience. Oh! We also picked up a letter at Fort Dodge from New York, From a Captain Buchanan, He said you are the meanest nastiest bullheaded man he ever had in his department and telling how you use brawn to do the job and was a bully. He said other things I will not repeat in front of Tilley. Sean Said "And?" The Mayor smiled and explained." that's just the person we were looking for." After you finish breakfast I will show you the town and let you meet your deputy, the sheriff is probably sleeping off a night at Queenies a saloon in the east part of town where we allow the gambling and soiled doves to set up camp. You might have problems up there from time to time. Sean enjoyed his breakfast and asked “should I get my horse when we check out the town Mayor?" No he said we will use my surrey. “Oh, I will also show you the best place to bed your horse Sean; it is at Charlie Curry's stable on the way to Queenies. Sun was rising high when they left the mayors house. Sean tied his horse to the mayor’s surrey so he could leave him for to stable. It was getting hot already and the breeze was making the dust spin in dust devils. They went to Charlie Curry's stable and left Sean’s horse for some hay, Charlie asked what the horses name was. “I never thought of that Sean replied.” Charlie advised, everyone names there horse fella." “Um, I know how about Ellie, that name would be appropriate. Its two bits a day for the stabling and feed, I will let her in the corral when she is through eating. “Well let’s start meeting the business people Sean." first they went south and visited the first of three saloons the town had. It was called wild horse saloon. The inside was anything but wild. There were about a dozen cowpokes in there. Six were at the bar and the rest were sitting around a table playing poker. The barman and owner was a character they called Rufus, though he had not one hair on his head. The saloon had no frills to be sure, just a place to wet your whistle and tables to sit and either play cards or tell tall tales. After leaving the wild horse, they went to a small building that held the town’s newspaper known as Prairie Dog Telegraph. Sean asked about the telegraph and the mayor told him it would be coming soon to the town and the editor was skilled in the key. The Editor was called Big Jim and he was big, it didn’t look like he ever went hungry. He was about five foot eight and had to be three hundred pounds. At the platen printing press was a scruffy looking man with ink on his face and hands, His name was Pete, a small man with a short beard about forty years old. Pete said “Hi Mayor I have your handbills you wanted. He handed the mayor a couple dozen handbills that read. Come one come all to the schoolhouse this Friday and meet our new sheriff Sean O’Malley. Advise him of any problems you are having and there will be punch for everyone. The meeting starts at six pm. "These will be put in plain view in parts of the town, should get a turnout explained the mayor. Pete asked “when you going to get rid of that lazy oaf Rusty Whitley?" "As soon as I get through with the tour of the town I will bring him to the jail and swear Sean in and give Rusty the door.” "Rusty isn't going to like that Mayor." Sean replied “I will have a talk with him." with a sheepish grin. They took the handbills and left. They visited a couple more establishments and went north and entered the gunsmiths, it was a small house and had a wall with different rifles and shotguns. A few flintlocks in various conditions were among the more expensive weapons. In back of the counter was a wall with handguns of all sorts. The man behind the counter was young with a dark beard and a full head of hair. "This is Farley, Sean he lives here with his son Billy and wife Anne. Sean was looking at a small hideout gun and said “How much for that little beauty. It was a colt derringer with two barrels a top of one another. For you fifteen dollars and I will throw in the ammo. Sean thought he was getting slim on the money but he did like it. Never know when you would have to leave the big colt home and a little security is a good thing. You got a bargain Farley as he gave him the money. When they left the mayor said " Someone is always home there, can't let undesirables get their hands on them. They visited a few more stores and went to the west part of town.

Abigail

It was where most of the homes were and on a hill he could see a large building. That is the schoolhouse Sean, it also is where we hold church on Sundays and occasional town meeting, and Friday you will meet some of the folks. He pulled the surrey to the front door and when they ascended sounds could be heard inside. There were quite a few students at desk with ink bottles on them. The pupils ranged in age from about seven years old to young men about eighteen. They were raising their hands to ask questions. Then Sean saw an angel. She was a young woman with red hair in a bun, a slight figure and a glow on her face. Sean’s jaw dropped at such a vision of beauty who was teaching the class. Sean said "Mayor you just have to introduce me." He then felt his day old beard on his face." She told the pupils to be quiet and open their books to the next the teacher walked out to the entrance, said Hello to the mayor, and looked at Sean. “Abigail, this is our new sheriff Sean O’Malley, He is from the big City New York.” Sean held out his hand Abigail took hold of it to shake hands .Sean was amazed how soft they were. Abigail pulled her hand away with a flushed look upon her face. “You can call me Sean “he said.” Well Mr. O’Malley, I hope you are better then the skunk that has held the office, there have been rumors that he is a paid man by the saloons and whatever else goes on in the south of town. “I assure you Abigail “And she broke in “Miss Sutter, please!” “Miss Sutter I assure you I will do my best and I hope you go to the town meeting.” The mayor handed her one of the handbills. She turned and walked back into the classroom. Sean thought to himself that she looked real good coming and going. When they got back to the surrey, the mayor advised him not to feel that she was rude but a few years back a couple of drifters manhandled her while she was in town. ““And where are they Mayor ““Dead, Abbeys brothers both came to town and shot them at Queenies. Some say it was self-defense but one was shot in the back of the head.” Anyone who harms her has to deal with her two brothers Hank and Seth or her father who owns a ranch 12 miles out of town... Since the incident, she is careful whom she meets. During the incident, the sheriff had the deputy cleaning the shack he has outside of town and the sheriff himself was at Queenies with a couple of the ladies it is said. “Can’t blame the Lass, mayor” Sean replied. They headed south towards Queenies stopping at the undertakers where they met Randy Tellers the undertaker who was a skeleton of a man with a dark demeanor and his helper Domingo, and sixteen-year-old half-breed who as he says, plotted the dead ones. After they left the undertakers the mayor told Sean they were entering the part of town decent folks do not visit, except to go to Chan Lees owned by a Chinese man and his wife. They had a daughter Mai who was in her twenties who had jet-black hair. Curious, unlike her parents she spoke perfect English. They laundered clothes and had baths in the rear of the house. They went to the spring that was four or five miles out of town. Sean noticed three water wagons outside. They supplied people with water. There were other doors at Chan’s and Sean could smell the sweet aroma of Opium. They went to the first salon that was the 'Last Chance watering hole'.

Queenies

It was getting late in the day as they arrived at Queenies. It was a large building with verandas and a corral had quite a few horses in it, which Sean surmised was from people who spent some time there. As they got off the Surrey six females were on the second sorry veranda. A couple was laughing and asked the mayor if he came on business or pleasure. The mayor turned red and grunted. The inside was as such to do any New York fancy club proud. There were games of cards in progress, two wheels of chance and a dice tables. Men were seen going upstairs with women in all forms of undress. There were chandeliers with many candles lighting the room. From the ceiling a swing was attached, from which sat a woman in a scant dress. There were to great bars with many bottles, no corn whiskey here he thought. On one wall behind a bar was a picture of a paddle wheeler and the other bar had a naked female. A man in a fancy suit and handlebar moustache came over and said “Welcome Mayor., good to see you brought a friend along. Is there something special Queenies can offer?” The mayor’s eyes looked at the floor “This is Sean O’Malley the new sheriff to be, Sean this is Jesse Cartwright the owner. He will be taking office this evening. A man was yelling at one of the tables and Jesse walked over followed by Sean and the mayor. The man said, “Jesse, I think I have been cheated, there are not five jacks in a deck!” The gambler who had a woman garter on one of his sleeves said, “This guy has a run of bad luck and starts imagining things, if he can’t play like a man he should drink at the wild horse.” Maybe his wife should know what a loser he is!” Jesse looked at Sean out of the corner of his eye and said “Cliff how much has he lost? “ Fifty Dollars, the gambler announced. “Give it back to him and He can have a drink on me. “ The Gambler looked upset but said here is your poke and handed the money to the man. “Never let it be said that Queenies is not fair “Chortled Jesse. Come to the bar gents and have a drink on me Jesse said pointed to the large bar with the paddlewheel on the wall. “We have ice!” Sean asked for a beer and the Mayor has some rye. The beer was as chilled as the ones he had back home. A woman in a red dress and jewelry walked over. Sean saw she was smoking a thin cigar, she said Hello to the mayor and looked at Sean and smiled “Hi Handsome!” She looked like Lily Langtry he had seen in the dime novels with a rough aura. My name is Ruby and I am married to that snake, looking toward Jesse who was going upstairs as there was a commotion going on. The mayor told her of Sean. Ruby held out her hand, which had a large ring on it. Please to meet you Sheriff,’” When Sean held her hand she rubbed his with her thumb. “Where has a big fellow like you been all my life, Breaking hearts I bet.” Sean could not keep from looking down at her low cut dress, which she was about to pop out of. She retrieved her hand and said” Where have you been mayor, Tillie got you on a harness?” The mayor ordered another rye. “The boys will be behaving when you’re around Sean; she gave him a wink and said, “I never behave!” Sean ordered another beer. Then mayor advised they better get back to the jailhouse and give Farley the bad news. He left a handbill with Ruby. As they rode by the watering hole some of the desperate types were outside staring at them as they rode by. “You might have trouble with that lot Sean.” Sean said, “As long as they obey the rules, they can look as mean as they want. The mayor thought ‘Rules’? Just before they got to the Sheriff office, they stopped in front of a pleasant two story home. “That’s Belles Rooming house, I will have your deputy make arrangements for you to stay there. Tomorrow you can move in. It has three meals and baths. In addition, there is plumbing. Sean asked why there with the hotel and maybe he would stay at the jail .The mayor had a broad smile. “Abigail, rooms there! “ I would appreciate that Mayor.” I will bring you to the bank in the morning and set up an account for your pay and expenses advised the mayor.

Sheriff Whitley

It was dusk when they reached the sheriffs office. The mayor and Sean walked to the door. The deputy was sweeping outside. Sean noticed a board on the wall used for announcements and wanted posters. It was barren. The mayor said Sean this is Willey your deputy. Willey was about nineteen and was powerful looking. It was easy to see he had been working on farms or ranches. He had a grey shirt and denim pants with suspenders. “Where’s your gun belt Willey?” Willey looked depressed and said Sheriff Whitley will not let me wear it, says he do not want me shooting off a toe, cannot use a deputy limping around. The Mayor explained. Sean is your new boss, as of tonight the new Sheriff. Willey asked. “Who is going to tell Whitley?” Sean said, “The mayor will and I will press the matter if I have to. Willie asked, “can I watch?’ Sean laughed and said, “Sure can Willey!” Willey let out a loud “Yippee, I just want to see his face.” They entered the office. Sheriff Whitley was in his chair with his feet on the desk, he had no boots or socks on and his feet smelled terrible. Whitley grumbled “what do you want mayor and who is this?’ The mayor now looked like he was loosing his courage and stuttered. Sean Broke in “I am the new Sheriff; you are finished in this town as a law dog. Take your stinking feet off my desk, pack up your belongings, and take off the badge and leave!” Whitley stood up and put his hand on his gun, arguing, “You can’t do this, get out of my office before I put holes in both of you. “ Willey backed up. The mayor seemed to shrink. Sean with the speed of a rattler reached over the desk and yanked Whitley over it. He pulled the sheriffs gun from the holster and threw it to Willey. He ripped the badge off the sheriff’s shirt tearing a long peace of cloth. He said “Willey open the door! When Willey did so Sean held the sheriff by the belt and faced him towards the door. With a swift kick in the rear, Whitley landed face first in the street. “Don’t ever force the issue with me, you sad excuse!” Because you menaced with your gun you forfeit it. I’ll be watching you so keep a wide path partner.” Sean closed the door and turned to the mayor “Now where were we. The mayor approached and took the badge and pinned it on Sean. Willey was beaming. Hold up your right hand Sean, do you promise to uphold the office of Sheriff of Prairie Dog flats and Kansas and enforce the law. Sean now was right where he wanted to be. “Yes, I do Mayor!” They shook hands and Willey came over and did. The mayor said Willey I want you to go over to Patties and set Sean up, Tell her it is a favor to the town and me. Sean will be over later. Sean looked at Willey and said the gun in your hands is yours now. Pick out a gun belt at Farley’s and the town will pay for it .Willey said yes sir Sheriff, and Sean said just Sean Willey just Shawn. Mayor could you send a letter to Charlie Bassett over in Dodge and get copies of whatever wanted posters he has and to send any new ones that come in, And I will be putting some rules up on the board outside. “Well usually we have meetings about rules Shawn but I think this time it’s on me.” Seeing Whitley get his come upping was worth it, but I think you made quite an enemy.” It goes with the territory mayor ‘” Bill, Sean just Bill.” The mayor said with a big smile.

Belles

Sean looked around the office after the mayor left and saw how it was in disarray. He spent three hours straightening things out. He went to the hotel and gathered some of his things then trudged on to Belles. When he picked up his horse in the morning, he would get the rest. What he needed was a good night sleep. Willey stayed at the jail and would get him if something arises, tomorrow he would go around and check the shops at night before he turned in. Belle opened the door to him and Said Welcome you must be Sean, you missed dinner but I can get you something if you would like. He told her not to bother he was exhausted. She took him to the second floor and a room with the number 11 on it. He entered the room and was pleased. It had good-sized bed and the furniture was clean and polished. He thanked Belle and closed the door. He had a glass of water from a picture that was on a table beside the bed. He hung up his gun belt and put the derringer under the pillow. As soon as he put his head on the pillow he was asleep. There was a knock on the door in the morning and Belle barked “Breakfast Sean!” Sean washed from a basin shaved with a straight razor he had bought, put on the clothes he had just bought the other day. Walking past the three other rooms on the floor, he wondered which one could be Abigail’s. He found the room where breakfast was to be. It was a large room .There was a large table in the middle. Paintings were on the walls and on the table a vase with freshly picked flowers, there were two men and a woman sitting at the table. Sean sat between an older man and the woman. Belle came in with a bowl of hard boiled eggs all shelled and a plate of Ham hocks. She introduced Sean to the people at the table. “This is Abe Colman!" as she looked at the elderly man. “He was here when there was nothing except Prairie dogs and Kickapoo’s ". This was the prominent tribe at the time. “The gentleman to your right is Clem Calhoun who was a major in the war under Quantrill. This young lady is Miss Emma Little, who owns the dress shop in town. We are missing." With that everyone turned to the stairs as Abigail descended. She yawned as she reached the final step. She wore a white blouse buttoned down at the collar and a green dress that matched her sparkling green eyes. What drew Sean’s attention was her hair was combed down and her silken red hair flowed below her shoulders. She looked art Sean, turned away and looked back at him. “Oh this is Abigail Sutter the school teacher." Belle advised. The men at the table were all talking about the way Sean had shown Sheriff Whitey a fast retirement. Sean detected a smile from Abigail. Sheriff O’Malley, what are you going to do with all the cowhands and drifters coming to town because of the cattle drives coming to Dodge and over flowing here lately? Sean responded “As long as they obey the law I have no problem. The elder man said “I hear the telegraph is coming and they have poles almost to prairie Dog". "I think it will be great to keep in touch with the rest of the world." replied Sean, who was looking at Abigail out of the corner of his eye. Abigail tried not to stare, but a clean shaven Sean and his boyish looks usually turned the female eye. One of the men was about 60, his name was Jeremiah and he told me he had been one of the first settlers in Prairie dog. Dodge was overrun with buffalo hunters and he did not like to be crowded. Prairie dog in the beginning was just a few shacks. Most of the inhabitants were mule skinners, buffalo hunters and a couple of outlaws to boot. He was a major in the civil war and fought at little table top with the south. The woman was Mary Ellen Houser who ran a dress shop and stitched peoples britches. Belle put the plates down and said a little prayer with us. She then told us to eat up. The talk at the table was mostly about Sean’s eviction of Sheriff Whitley and things such as what Chan had been charging for the water he brought. Sean asked Jeremiah about the prairie dogs. He said that the place was overrun with them until someone found out they were edible. He was going on about the Indian problems, When Abigail smiled and told Sean he should shave more often he looked so different. That made Sean’s morning. He told them that he would be asking for a couple more deputies in order to keep peace, as more and more cowboys are drifting in. He said he would try to keep most of the trouble makers to the south of town. Abigail explained that her father and brothers had finished a roundup and they had a lot of trail hands who were going to be leaving. “There might be a fine selection to pick from Sheriff.” “You can ask my father at the town meeting tomorrow as he will be there, and he has a lot of power in the town.” “Thanks Abby, I mean Miss Sutter."

The Town Meeting

The following night Sean arrived at the town Meeting, there were many horses in the coral and half a dozen surreys outside being tended to by a couple of boys. Sean went in and was told to go through the classroom and go through the door in the back. There was a table at the door and a man was collecting any guns and tagging them with the owner’s name. “Oh Sheriff I guess your exempt” the fellow said. “No rules are rules “Sean replied as he handed his gun to the man. There were maybe 45 people in the room, some by the table with the punch bowl. The mayor was behind a podium and advised all to sit down. “Let’s start this meeting with some news you all have been waiting for.” Wells Fargo is going to run the stage here from Dodge.” People, who want to invest in a deal with Wells Fargo for stabling some horses, see me after the meeting. American Telegraph has been putting up poles from Dodge and should have a pole outside the Prairie Dog Newspaper, in a couple of weeks. I have approved a new Deputy and our new Sheriff will be recruiting one.” Speaking of which, I would like you all to meet our new Sheriff Sean O’Malley.” He beckoned Sean to the podium. Sean went to the podium and scanned the throng. There were most of the townsfolk he knew and thought them decent folks. He then noticed two cowboys in the rear who looked menacing. Sean greeted the crowd and told them how it was his dream to be out west and after being a lawman in the big city he would apply all he had learned to protect and serve them all. He told them how he was going to start by keeping all the rowdy types on the south of the town and he was public nuisances to be in the rest of the town. Telling how he would protect the south of town also but knew a lot of money was spent there and helped the town’s tax coffers. His office would be open for anyone to discuss matters concerning the welfare of the town and its citizens, and his office would be an honest and just one. With that someone yelled “Yes, we finally got someone who had the guts to boot Whitley out!”” Settle down” the mayor requested. Sean noticed Abigail and three men applauding. The older one must have been her father and the other two Hank and Seth, he could see the resemblance. Sean left the podium and walked over to the Sutter’s. The older man told him he was Tom Sutton and these were his boys Hank and Seth, handshakes went all around. He then looked towards his daughter and said” You know my daughter Abigail of course.” Sean was hoping her father did not see into his heart. “Yes I do, she is a fine school teacher.” The brothers were nudging each other. “We have some fine cowhands who will be going back to Texas so you should come up next weekend and recruit one. Some are pretty good with a gun.” Tom suggested. Oh and Abigail can take you there as I want to have her around for a couple of days, I can trust you with my daughter I am sure.” Abigail blushed. “Thank you very much I will take you up on the offer, See you next weekend.” Abigail began to say something to her father but he put a finger to her lips and kissed her on the forehead. Sean told them he had to do a final check of the time and turn in.

Death of a salesman

The Next Morning after Breakfast Sean was walking over to the stable to get Ellie. He could hear Willey yelling “Sheriff come quickly!” Sean got his horse and rode to the jail. He saw Domingo the undertaker’s helper standing in front of his office. “Domingo what’s wrong?” “Some one left a dead man in front of our shack.” He said in broken English. . “Let’s go see Domingo”. Domingo mounted bareback a horse with a black plume on its head, obviously one of the horses they used to pull the wagon which hauled the dearly departed. They came up to the shack and Randy Teller was standing with his hands on his hips. There against the wall was a man tied to a plank for display and a sign above his head which read ‘Do You Know Me? Randy was out of sorts. “I am not planting one without money. It’s a dollar without the wooden casket, and I will even tip my hat when I do it.” Sean looked at the man, his face was all black and blue and his throat was slit from ear to ear. He then noticed it was the man at Queenies the gambler who was made to give the money back to. Sean looked at his deputy and said “we have to go to Queenies I want to talk to someone. He gave the undertaker a silver dollar told him that’s all the town will allow him for a salesman who is a drifter. They rode to Queenies, going past Chan’s they could see the daughter hanging close to dry. The back of one of the water wagons could be seen in the distance going towards the mountain and the spring. Going by the first saloon they could see the two cowpokes that were at the meeting, the rebel he had argued with and to Sean’s astonishment, sitting on the porch in a chair was Rusty Whitley with a Shotgun across his lap. The rebel yelled “Damn carpet bagging law dog I hope you get killed!” Whitley just spit some chewing tobacco on the dirt.

Aces or Better

They tied their horses up to the hitching post outside. Even this early the place was noisy. “Back my play Willey.” Sean said and Willey nodded. Neither of them were gunslingers, Sean could hit what he shot at but practicing a quicker draw had not born fruit. Willey was good in a fight but his ineptness with a six shooter was legend. Entering the saloon they noticed the woman was not yet sitting on the swing. A few dandies were at the bar talking to Ruby, her husband could not be seen. There were a couple of games of chance going on and at on table was just the man he was looking for. There were four men and the gambler at the table. Sean stood behind a cowpoke staring at the gambler; Willie positioned himself just to the right of the suspect.” What do you want Sheriff?” Sean said” I want to have a talk with you outside on a matter. Sean noticed a gun on the table beside him. “I am doing business Sheriff and I am on the winning side, get lost!” Sean loudly exclaimed “You boys know you’re being cheated don’t you!” The gambler reached for his gun, Sean had his gun halfway out but never would make it. Willey pulled his gun out and it hit the lip of the table and fell out of his hand hitting the floor. The Gambler turned his gun towards Willie when he was startled, but now Sean had his colt pointed and cocked. He pulled the trigger and there was a great blast and blue smoke covered view of the gambler. The players at the table rubbing their ears and covered with brain matter jumped up. There lay the gambler with not much of a face left and the back of his head gone. The prostitutes came running out of there rooms on the second floor. Ruby came over and said “Sean you woke up my whores and who is going to clean up this mess. She puffed from the ever present cigar. Ruby I suspect he killed a man from the other night and he drew on me. She started going through the gamblers pockets even though covered with brain matter. Sean asked “what the hell are you doing Ruby?’ The bum had a bar bill and the undertaker won’t bury him without payment. “I need a couple of dollars for the man he killed also. She pulled silver coins and paper money from his pockets, followed by a jack of spades in one pocket and an ace in the other. She pulled of his coat and a deuce fell from the sleeve. She looked at the stairway “First whore to get here and clean up this mess gets a silver dollar.” There was a clatter as the woman knocked against each other on the stairs.” Someone take this cheater outside to wait for the undertaker and tuck him out of sight.’ Ruby Yelled. When my snake of a husband comes back from Dodge he is going to be furious Sheriff, Have a drink with me sunshine. We will tell the undertaker on the way by but I do think we can wet our whistles with a cold beer. As they stood at the bar a man with a fancy jacket and a vest entered looking at the man who was being drug out by his feet. He looked at the cowpokes that just lost a card partner and said while shuffling some cards “Game anyone? With that the men still were having their ears ringing from the booming of the colt pulled up chairs and sat down. The new Gambler asked “What the hell do you boys have all over your clothes?”

Ruby Visits

Sean was in his office while Willie went on patrol and the door opened. Ruby, dressed in a scandalous blue dress that should have had more fabric to it entered. “Hi Sheriff I was down at Emma’s dress shop and thought I would stop in. “Ruby Emma is forgetting to add cloth to your attire.” Sean said with smirk. Ruby laughed “customers like it all the males and some of the females.” She winked. “Have a seat Ruby, there must be a reason you’re here so early.” “Well Jesse is really upset you killed that gambler in his place, he says you could have waited until he had left.” She told him of a couple of new gamblers working in the saloon and of a singer that was hired. She sings like a bird and not hard on the eyes, she came in from Dodge yesterday; also Jesse is building a stage to have some entertainment and said he can’t have people getting their heads blown off in there. She advised him of a girl working at The Last Chance Saloon. She is an Indian, one of my customers told me. He stopped by there as the drinks are cheap and Paco behind the bar was bragging as they had a whore. They have her tucked away in a back room. Imagine someone working in that awful place. “Thanks Ruby I will definitely look into it.” She came over and before Sean could object sat in his lap. “Just how thankful can you be Sean?” She was rubbing the back of his neck and he could smell her perfume. She put her face up close, and then they kissed. The door opened and there stood Willey, his jaw dropped and face flushed. He blurted out “Sorry Sheriff, Sorry Mrs. Cartwright, I will come back later!” Ruby Smiled at Sean then got up and straightened her attire. “Its okay Willie I was just leaving.” She got to the door and before she left blew Sean a kiss. Sean gave Willey some wanted posters to put up and asked for a reminder to visit Charlie’s Saloon. Willey left and Sean laughed out loud.

The Indian Girl

Sean and Wiley made a visit to the Last Chance Watering Hole on a Thursday morning a day after Ruby’s telling of an Indian girl there. They entered early in the morning and there were only a couple of wranglers at the bar. Sean walked up to the bar and got the barkeeps attention. “I here you have whore working here? “ Not against the law Sheriff what’s the problem, Queenies afraid of competition?” I would like to see her and be quick about it. Paco the Barkeep said “Don’t want no trouble Sheriff, be right back. He came back with his arm around an Indian girl in a buckskin dress. She looked young and Sean was getting irritated. She had a bruise under her eye. “What happened to her eye Paco?” How the hell do I know, she is clumsy and always bumping into something.” Sean looked at her and said “How old are you?” How did you get here?” Sean went to hold her chin to look at her eye and she flinched. She doesn’t speak English and I assure you she is as happy as can be.” If I find out there is something shady going on here I will hold you personally responsible. He let the woman go and she went back to the room. The man with the rebel hat came in with another hombre he had seen before on his way to Queenies. “Thought something smelled when I was coming in “he said. Paco yelled at him “Shut up Cal, We don’t need law trouble!” “You and Zeke come over and have a beer on me. The two brushed against Sean on the way by with Cal saying “Asshole.” Paco softly asked “Do you and deputy want a drink?” Sean replied “I don’t like piss like the rest of your customers. Sean and Willey backed out of the place. Outside Sean told Willey ,” As soon as I get back from Tom Suttons ranch I am going to find out what is going on in that sorry excuse for a saloon .

Giddy up

Breakfast on Saturday at Belles was as usual good food and company and a late Abigail. Sean asked Emma “Is Ruby a regular customer?” Oh yes, she brought in the prettiest person I’ve seen in a while except for maybe Abigail. She is a singer at Queenies.” If I remember right they call her Slim, The girl is easy to fit. “Does she wear the same clothes as Ruby?” Sean chuckled “or lack of.” Oh no she selects the loveliest costumes for her act and ordered an ensemble from back east. Sean heard boots on the stairs and looked back. There was Abigail with boots dark blue cloth pants and a shirt to match. She had a Hat, poncho and a bedroll in her arms. Emma welcomed her to the table. Sean was amazed how wonderful she looked. “Sheriff sorry I am late but a lady has to prepare herself.” Abe who was never known to keep silent told her that he wished he was a little younger and he would fight the sheriff for her. She gave Sean a glare. The breakfast which always had talk of the town skipped from one subject to the other. Abe asked if Willie could handle things while Sean was away. Emma replied with a laugh “As long as he doesn’t shoot himself.” Abe asked another question “What’s going on at the last Chance, I was at the Wild Horse and the fellow I was playing checkers with spoke about some Indian girl at Charlie’s.” “I hope some chief isn’t going to come here and start scalping, there has been no Indian trouble for at least five years.” As soon as I get back, hopefully with a new deputy, it will be a priority. Abe asked “Why don’t you get a deputy from the town.” Sean replied” I do not want anyone with ties to the town, someone who can back me up no matter what.” Willie is a faithful deputy but I need someone who can handle a gun.” After saying their goodbyes Sean and Abigail went to Charlie Curries Stable. Abigail’s horse was a fine palomino given to her by her father and its name was Goldie. Sean went to help Abigail into the saddle and she gave him a look which he took to mean ‘Back off’. They galloped out for a five hour ride to the ranch.

The Tree Grove

Three hours into the ride Sean was getting sore as he was not use to riding that long. “Can we stop Abigail I am not use to this, Easterner you know. Abigail laughed and pointed to a grove of trees Once inside the tree grove they dismounted tied the horses to the trees and gave the horses water cupped in their hands from the canteens. They laid out the bedrolls and relaxed on them. Sheriff how come you never married?” Well I was going to but the lass turned into a demon.” “Well we are better for it.” she added. Sean again noticed how beautiful she was. “Why did you come west?” Well I was sick of the crowds, steam cars, and all the noise.” “I man needs space to grow.” She told him her father and he was so much alike and they were stubborn, rough and handsome to boot. You both have a devilish nature, but honest to a fault. Sean stared at her. “Don’t get any ideas. They heard a horse whiney and looked towards the ridge they had come down. There were at least twenty Indians with painted horses riding by. Sean went rubbed the horses to keep them quiet. The Indians were looking all around. Abigail got close to Sean and held him from behind. He could feel her shudder and knew she was scared. He turned and held her close.” Don’t worry I think I know what they are looking for.” He looked into her green eyes and felt her heart throbbing. The group slowly trotted on. “We better stay awhile until we are sure they moved on.” He advised. She pulled her bedroll next to his and they talked softly. Sean told her of the Indian girl at Charlie’s.” Sean they will find out and their tribe will burn down the town!” He noticed she called him Sean and tested the waters. “Abigail I will take care of business right when we get back this is becoming personal with me. “ She looked at him and there was something stirring within her, something that had been missing a long time. They talked for awhile and Sean said we better get going. She leaned over and kissed him He held her tightly and then she pulled away “I need time Sean, please respect that.” They saddled up and headed for the ranch. Sean was kind of glad the Indians had come by.

Sweet

They covered the rest of the way to the ranch and reached there before sundown. Abigail’s family was outside the ranch house. “Have any trouble on the trail?” we expected you sooner, Tom Cartwright asked.” Did the sheriff behave himself Kitten? Sean looked at her and said “Kitten?” She told him her parents use to call her that when she was a little girl. They dismounted and a wrangler took their horses to the corral. “Father we saw a group of Indians on painted ponies wandering around half way to town; we had to wait them out.” “Abigail go inside with your mother, she wants to ask you a whole wagon load of questions.” “Sean come along with me to the bunkhouse there are some cowboys there.” They will be leaving in the morning; we have enough to run the ranch until next cattle drive next spring.” It was a little way to the bunk house and Tom wanted to walk so he could talk to Sean. He told him he had seen the way Sean had been looking at his daughter. He didn’t know Sean’s attention but wanted him to know that she had been hurt before and not to be playing with her feelings. Sean advised him that Abigail was a wonderful woman and any thoughts he has towards Abigail are totally honorable. They came to the bunkhouse and entered. There were several cowpokes left and they gave Sean their attention. “Boy’s I am the sheriff of Prairie Dog Flats and I am looking for a deputy. Because I am not to handy slapping leather I would want the man to good enough to back me up if I need him. They all turned and looked at a man sitting on a bunk. He got up and went over to Sean. My name is Billy, but they call me sweet because I love candy. Billy was Twenty years old almost as tall as Sean and slim. What Sean notices was he was wearing two guns that had carved bone handles. “I’m from Abilene sheriff, and I’ve seen enough trail dust.” I would like to try settling in a town for awhile and if I can get paid I am your man. Sean asked” Are you any good with those shooting irons?” They went outside and one of the wranglers had an empty bean can. He told Sean to throw the bean can when ever he wanted to. Sean stood behind Billy so he could not see him throw the can. Sean waited then threw the can high in the air. Billy pulled both guns out quicker then Sean thought possible and blasted the can mid air and made it stay there with precision marksmanship. He then twirled the guns and re holstered them.” You’re the man I want Billy can you have your gear ready in the morning?” Sure Can Sheriff, I travel light.” They left the bunk house and retired to the main house. All eyes were on Abigail as she told of Sean’s exploits as sheriff and how scared she was seeing the Indians Abigail went to bed early and Growled when Sean said “Goodnight Kitten!” Tom and his sons sat up for awhile, Sean telling of New York and the bridge they were building. Tom was wondering what Prairie Dog Flats future was going to be with the coming of the stage line and telegraph. Sean enjoyed their company and told them so before he went to bed.

Deadly day at Prairie Dog Flats

The ride back was uneventful except Abigail thought she saw Indians behind every rock. There were signs of shoeless ponies near town and Sean new he had to act fast. They arrived at the jail and Sean showed Billy where he could bed down at the jail until he got settled. Abigail went to Belles, after she dropped off her horse. Willey came in and he introduced him to Billy. Willey asked if he should bring their horses to the stable and Sean told him not to as they would need them “Willey go find Domingo and bring him here.” Willey came back with Domingo in about an hour. “Domingo, how many Indian languages do you speak?” “Most of the tribes around here I guess. Let’s all take a ride out to the Last Chance Watering hole, come on Billy. Sean swore him in and gave him a deputy badge. Domingo warned “Sheriff they won’t let me in Charlie’s, telling me that half breeds got to drink from the horse trough.” “Probably taste better then the shit they serve there, but today I guess we both settle scores there. It was early afternoon when they reached Charlie’s. There were the two strangers sitting outside. Sean gave Willie the shotgun he brought and said “If these two get up shoot them!” Even Willey won’t miss from that distance he said to the men. “Paco, Bring the Indian girl out here, now!” ‘She’s busy and get that half breed out of here!” Paco yelled. A Scream came from behind the door in the rear. “Wait here and make sure Paco keeps his hands above the bar.” Sean opened the door and heard more screams coming from a room on the right. He opened the door and there was Cal, his pants around his knees trying to force himself on the Indian girl. Sean grabbed him by the hair and dragged him kicking and yelling into the bar. Sean kicked him in the knee and Cal fell to the floor. “Stay down Cal, Stay down.” Sean went in as the girl adjusted her buckskins. He talked softly to her and wiped her tears. He held her arm and led her to the bar. Paco said “Honest sheriff Cal said he bought her from a buck on the trail.” “Shut up Paco.” The Indian girl with her eyes filled with tears said some words Sean did not understand. Domingo said “That’s Comanche and her name is Niabi which means Fawn She says the man on the floor shot her brother on the trail and brought her here. Also she was beaten by the man on the floor and another man who usually had a shotgun with him. She says her father is very important in the tribe and he will be seeking revenge when he finds where she is. There was a shotgun blast outside and Sean expected Willey to walk in. Randy Whitley had reloaded and ran into the room yelling “You’re a dead man Law dog!” Billy drew both pistols and riddled Whitley with bullets. He slumped to the floor in a pool of blood. Billy stood there with both guns smoking. No one else came through the door. Sean told Billy to watch cal and Paco and went outside. There was Willey he had taken buckshot to the chest and was dead. The two strangers had their hands up saying they did not do anything and not to shoot. “Get on your horses and get the hell out of here.” He knelt beside Willey and cried. Domingo came out and rubbed Sean’s shoulders. Sean said get the wagon and take him to the undertakers, clean him up real good. I want a good casket and a preacher when he is buried. And I will do the digging Domingo, do you understand. Domingo went to his horse and rode off towards the undertakers to retrieve the wagon. He went into the saloon kicking Whitley’s form on the way by. Sean looked at Paco and told him” I will give you one hour to get out of town and If I see you again I will shoot you proper. Sean reached for his gun before Paco could bring his arms up. The big 44 roared and Paco was shot right between the eyes. Sean said” I am not that fast but I hit what I aim at.” Billy Stay here until Domingo comes back, I will take the girl on one of the horses outside and cal to town. “Get up Cal, as he gave him a kick in the ribs. “ You shot Paco in cold blood law dog and I saw it. Sean open handed him and replied. I said he had a gun, Billy says he had a gun and everyone else who was here is dead. Cal said “The Indian girl saw it” Sean just laughed. The girl ran over and started pummeling Cal. She put a licking on him leaving his face with welts. “I am tempted to let her father have you, let him bury you in an ant hill put honey on your face and let them feed for awhile. He tied Cal up and then put him over Cal’s horse and they went to town. As they went by the school Abigail was outside with the pupils and she just stared. All the towns’ people did the same as they slowly trotted to the jail. Sean locked Cal in a cell and took the Indian girl to belle’s Belle hugged the girl and took her upstairs and cleaned he up. The next day Willie was buried. Sean did as he promised and did all the digging. A preacher said the proper words over the grave. Many of the town folk had come to the burial as Willey had many friends. Seam could see Abigail in the crowd and she was crying. It was a sad day for Sean and the town.

Niabi

Two days went by and Sean at breakfast announced he was going to take the Indian girl back to her tribe. Domingo would go with him. Abigail had a worried look on her face but Sean said “The Comanche’s have a treaty with us and I don’t think they will break it. Domingo says they have a camp north of the Arkansas River.” Niabi came downstairs and Belle showed her where to sit. All eyes were on her. Abigail thought she must be an Indian princess as she appeared almost regal. Sean looked at her and said “Niabi, you are going home today.” She responded to her name and had a questioned look on her face. Sean went to Charlie Curries stable and got his horse and Cal’s. She stopped Charlie from putting on the saddle as she would ride bareback. They trotted to the jailhouse and Domingo’s horse was already tied up to the hitching post out front. Billy was sitting with his feet on the desk talking to Domingo, and took them down quickly when Sean and Niabi entered. Sean asked Domingo to tell her she was going home. She smiled and her eyes showed joy. A voice was heard from the cells. Cal was yelling “Your deputy told me you gave my horse to that Indian bitch!” “That’s horse thieving asshole, a hanging offence!”” I ought to give you to her father and be done with it ‘” Keep an eye on the town sweet I will be back as soon as I can. “ Billy wished them luck. It was a two hour ride to the Arkansas and they sighted a band of Comanche’s. They rode slowly over to them and Sean thought how majestic they looked, so proud a people. Niabi broke to a gallop and rode over to them. “Well Domingo we shall see if they are so happy to see her they will forget about us.” A tall Indian with two feathers and an eagle bone chest plate dismounted and yelled “Niabi!” She dismounted and ran to his arms. Domingo listened to her tell the story of her abduction and told of how Sean had saved her and lost a friend. He looked over at Sean and nodded his head. Domingo said the buck was her intended. He said that his name was Hinun which means spirit of the storm .She is talking him out of going after Cal. They mounted and Niabi trotted over to Sean and Domingo. She spoke to him and Domingo translated. She said “You saved my life and I and my tribe will never forget.” I will go to my people and tell them of the tall man with a strong heart who saved her from taking her own life to be free from the white devils. I hope we meet again someday, with that she turned and went back to Hinun and the others. Sean watched as they rode away. They crossed the river at a low point and Niabi turned one last time and looked back. Sean waved to her. Sean felt relieved she kept them from seeking revenge and new someday their paths might meet again. They turned and rode back to town.
Sandy

When Sean got to the office and went inside Billy was talking to a gangling youth. He said “Sheriff this is Sandy and he is looking for the empty deputy job.” Sandy looked about Willies age. Sandy said “Charlie over at the stable said you were looking for a deputy and I sure could use the money. “ Well Sandy can you handle a gun?” Well sheriff I practiced on stumps at my fathers place. Sean took willies gun belt and gun and said its not loaded son, put it on and let’s see what you got.” He put on the gun belt and said “Say when” Sean replied “Draw!” He drew the gun out and it slipped out of his hand and clunked on the floor. Sean smiled remembering Willies ineptness. Sean said “We will try you out, but don’t try drawing fast. Maybe Sweet can give you lessons.” You can wear the gun belt until you can buy your own; take care of it as it belonged to a great man.” “Sweet show him where to bunk,” “I will see you hang for stealing my horse and shooting poor old Paco law dog!” echoed from the cells. Sandy asked ““what’s he in for?” “He is in there for being a wart on the ass of the world.” Sean retorted. Sandy laughed out loud. Billy said “Billy said “I heard Jessie Cartwright took over the Last Chance Watering Hole and hired those two strangers we had out there to run it.” “Shit!” Sean blurted out, “I thought we were through with that place. “ Who named it the last chance watering hole, Sandy do you know? “My father said it originally was owned by a man named Pete who was plugged in there. Paco took over and was too cheap to make another sign. “Sean knew he would have to keep am eye on it. “ I wonder what Jessie has to do with those two drifters.” Billy said” Nothing good I bet.” “Sandy Sweet will show you what to do in here I am going to Belles and rest up. He knew they Sweet and Sandy would get along.

Abigail's Visit

After leaving his horse at Charlie’s Stable he went to Belles. The only ones there were Belle and Abe. Belle said “Sure is good to see you back Sean, and a certain miss has been pining for you.” “Now who could that be?” he said with a grin. Abe came down and said “If I was a few years younger I would loved to have hit the trail with you and met those Indians.” “I use to be pretty good with a buffalo gun.” “I will tell everyone about it at breakfast I am too tired and will skip dinner tonight. “ Double helpings in the morning Sean.” Belle reassured him. Sean slept soundly and late in the night after midnight he heard a soft tapping at the door. On no something has happened in the town he thought. He opened the door a crack and there was a vision that stirred something deep inside him. It was Abigail and she was dressed in her bed clothes. ““Sean is it alright if I come in?” she entered before he could respond and held a finger to her lips, for him to be quiet. She did not even take notice he was naked and wrapped her arms around him. He felt her warmth and they kissed long and hard. “I was so worried Sean, don’t think I am awful but I just had to see you tonight.” She looked down and said ““I guess I am really seeing you.”! They both laughed and Abigail held her finger to her lips again. She pulled him over to the bed and he lay down. She pulled the night dress over her body and lay down next to him. “I hope you’re the man I think you are Sean, I don’t want to be hurt again.” They made love that night and slept together until morning when Abigail slipped out of the room and went back to hers...The next morning at breakfast while Sean told of the adventure Abigail looked at him and had a sparkle in her eyes that hadn’t been there for a long time, and everyone noticed.

Here comes the judge

That day the mayor came into the jailhouse with a man with a great top hat. He was told it was the circuit judge Calvin Thompson. “Sean you will have to let Cal go,” There is nothing he can be held for we can prove.” The mayor said in a matter of fact way. “The judge said “Release that man immediately!” Sean was angry and spoke before he thought. “Whose back pocket are you in Judge.” I will have your job if you don’t shut up!” “Mayor you can’t be serious.” Sweet and Sandy looked at Sean and wondered if he would hit one of the officials. “Sweet Get that son of a bitch out of my jail!” Sweet opened the cell and brought Cal to the front office. Cal was spitting as he talked “Judge I want to press charges against that maniac, for killing Paco and stealing my horse!” Sean chortled “Oh you two know each other?” The Judge gave Sean a mean look and said” Cal gets the hell out of here while you got a chance.” Where’s my gun law dog?” Sean told him someone must have stolen it. Where’s that Indian with my horse asshole! Sean grabbed him and told Sandy to open the door. When the door was open Sean kicked Cal as hard as he could in the rear and cal went tumbling into the street. “Better keep your distance from me Cal or you will be wishing you were never born. Cal left cursing Sean and everyone he saw. The mayor and the judge left and Sean slammed the door shut. Sean sat down and told his deputies to keep an eye on the mayor if you see him anywhere and to tell him who he talks to. He told Billie get your horse and follow me to The Last Chance.

Joanquin

Sean and Billy rode up to the last chance and even though early there were about nine horses in the coral. “Sweet I want you to take note of the faces in here and we will watch for them in any wanted posters come in.” They went through the door and notice several men at the bar. One was a Mexican. The two strangers were behind the bar and giving the sheriff a disdainful look. Morning Sheriff one of the men behind the bar said. “You both work for Jesse Cartwright?” “No law against it, is there Sheriff?” I like to know who are operating businesses in my town. “The tall man with a mole under his eye replied my name is Slade and this is my brother Leland.” He held out his hand but Sean did not respond. Leland was a little shorter then Slade and had a scar on his forehead that looked like it came from a knife. Sean turned to the Mexican and asked “Halas English Senor. The Mexican smiled showing large teeth and a gold one on the left side. Si! Hombre. My name is Joaquin and I am looking for work at one of the small rancheros around here. He was wearing a gun belt with fancy scroll work on it he also had a bandolier across his body for carrying rifle shells. He had a drooping mustache and a twitch in one eye. Sean knew this was no ordinary drifter. Sean said “I wish you well my friend and turned to look at the rest of the rabble in the saloon. There were the usual characters he had seen here before. “I will be keeping an eye on this place, so keep everything legal here.” “Why Sheriff we are going to be good citizens. Joaquin laughed “Si hombre, we all will be good citizens.” As Sean and Billy left and were outside they could hear laughing coming from inside. “Sweet, watch out for that Joaquin, I have a feeling he will be trouble.” We will check out Queenies tonight."

Laura Lee

Twenty or thirty chairs arranged towards the stage and they were filled. Another dozen cowpokes were standing near the stage. Ruby was on the stage talking to the crowd, she hadn't seen them enter. Sean went over to the bar and Billy walked towards the stage. Sean ordered a beer and asked the bartender if he knew about his boss taking over the Last Chance. “I don't mess around with Mr. Cartwright’s affairs.” the barkeep advised. "Where is Cartwright anyway?” Sean asked the barkeep shrugged. Then Ruby saw Billy by the bar that was near the stage and looked towards the front of the place and saw Sean. She started waving for him to come in. On the way Sean noticed a three of the sporting ladies bringing customers up the stairs. “Hope the Doctor visits here often." he thought. When he got near the stage Ruby ran to him and held him too close for comfort, as he could feel her heart beat. "Sheriff where in the hell have you been Honey?" "Did you come all the way here to see little old me?" Ruby where is your husband?" She replied” He went to Dodge on business,"" Why?" Sean knew he should pull away but He kind of liked it. “Ruby do you know why he took over the last chance?" He does real well here and the last Chance only brings in saddle tramps for the cheap liquor. “He said he was going to own all the saloons in Prairie Dog Flats and had other enterprises to create.” “The Enterprises better be legal." Sean declared. There was applause and a very beautiful young woman in a dance hall costume got on the stage. “Keep your eyes in your head big guy, that’s our new entertainment." The room came to a hush and one cowboy who was seated stood up and yelled “Shut up boys, so we can hear her!" Ruby announced to Sean “That is Laura Lee our new singer, Jesse arranged for her to come here and she sings like a bird." Laura lee was like nothing Sean had seen before except for Abigail and Ruby, she was had a cherub quality to her with the body of a goddess. “Sean come over to the bar so we can talk." Lora Lee was singing and had the mixed audience of Prairie Dogs citizens of note and wranglers from the nearby ranches. Sean noticed his Deputy was staring at the singer and was frozen still. Ruby told the bartender Give me a rye and a beer for the sheriff. Sean had recognized the barkeep at the other bar but this bar near the stage had a new one. Ruby laughed “Jesse even wants the Wild horse saloon and made them an offer, though the owner does not want to sell." Sean replied" And do what"? "Set up crooked checker games.” Ruby almost spilled her drink laughing. At this time Judge Thomson came from nowhere and sat at the end of the bar and ordered a bottle of whiskey. “Oh you know the judge Sean?""Does he come in here much"? ““He has been coming in for a week and likes to visit the girls upstairs.” She said with a wink. Laura Lee got off the stage and was surrounded by admirers including Billy. Sean looked toward the stairs as another girl went up and noticed a door open a crack and shut quickly. “Keep an eye on Billy, Ruby I will be right back." He's a little young for me Sean "she laughed but I will.” Sean went outside as a surrey came trotting from behind Queenies and headed into town. He recognized it. The Mayor was a sporting man it seems.

Chad

When Sean returned Ruby, Billy and Laura Lee were sitting at a table with a tall wine bottle and four glasses. There was an empty chair and Sean sat down. Billy and Laura Lee were in conversation and neither noticed anyone else in the room. “Oh by the way Sheriff, Doc Selby comes and checks the girls every Saturday.” Great, we don't want half the town having their privates fall off." he replied. Ruby laughed and put her hand on Sean’s and said. "Sheriff you are such a kidder." Sean wasn't kidding. Sean wasn't use to wine and was getting a little groggy. Ruby held his hand and told him how she wished she had met him before the rattler came into her life. Laura Lee had to sing another song and went back on stage followed by her new friend Billy. There was an argument going on at the faro table and Sean went to get up. “Sean!" She had never called him by name. “Leave it be Chad will take care of it. Sean wondered who Chad was. A man dressed in black with a hat of the same color; with silver Decorations on the hatband came from nowhere and walked over to the faro table. The way he wore his gun belt told the sheriff this was a man who knew how to handle shooting irons. ““lot of new people around here Ruby" She said” Well honey it’s because of all the new business and with the stage line coming here we will need more help. The man who was arguing stood up and banged his hand on the table. Chad grabbed his arm and said something to him. Chad grabbed him by the back of the neck and took him to the door and pushed him out of it. Sean said “Your husband should really make people leave their guns for the barkeepers to put them behind the bar.” Ruby got up and went over to him. She sat in his lap and said" Stop talking about him Sean you will ruin the moment and kissed him on the lips and Sean did not reject it.It was getting late and the saloon was getting noisy. Cowboys drunk or on their way there were getting rowdy. The gambling tables were all very busy. Then a half naked woman came down the stairway screaming. A Cowpoke after his money’s worth was close in pursuit. Cal went over and hit him in the forehead with the butt of his pistol sending him reeling. He dropped to the floor unconscious. The woman, not ashamed to be almost naked in the room started going through the cowboys pockets. She came out with some paper money and a couple of silver dollars, probably all he had in the world. “Get upstairs whore!” Chad said. All the time Ruby was rubbing the inside of Sean’s leg and nibbling on his ear. “Come-on Sean I can do things you never heard of.” Laura Lee and Billy were on their way back to the table and were almost there when a well dressed man with a watch fob on a chain grabbed Laura’s bottom hard and asked what the going rate would be. Billy punched him so hard on the jaw Sean thought a table broke somewhere. Chad who was watching ran over and roughly spun Billy around. Billy went for his gun and so did Chad. They were frozen in time over the man sprawled on the floor groaning and rubbing his jaw. They cocked their weapons. Sean got out of the chair quickly displacing Ruby who said “Shit!” “Sean drew his gun and said put your irons away boys its over.” Nobody moved and the room was dead still. “Chad I will put your brains on the wall, holster that weapon!” They all stood there a heart beat away from a shootout when Chad holstered his gun. Billy did the same and Laura Lee fell into his arms sobbing. “That asshole put his hands on your singer Chad throw him out!” Chad said “A good customer has got to do something worse then grab an ass that is out there for the taking. Sean Grabbed Billy just in time and pulled him out the door.

The Offer

When they returned to town Sandy was outside the jailhouse. “Sheriff Charlie Curry was here and said he was robbed. He said Cal; someone you would be familiar with stole a chestnut horse and saddle from his stable. The owner of the horse is really angry. He tried to stop him but Cal had a revolver and took a shot at him when he rode off. Sean asked which way he went. “He went in the direction of the Arkansas River. “ Sean knew where he was going and Niabi was under the protection of her people now. “I will go after him in the morning Sandy, take a tour of the town and turn in. “Billy, thanks for the help and promise you won’t go back to Queenies tonight.” Bill assured him he would not.” I am going to stop by the Wild horse and will go to Belles after.” Sean advised. The Wild horse saloon had a couple of horses outside hitched to the post out front. Inside their was a couple of men drinking at the bar and a old man who was asleep sitting at a table with a checker board in front of him. The owner and barkeep Amos Butler was wiping the bar down. One of the men at the bar turned and said hello to Sean. “Hello Sheriff, we have not met, my name is Doc Selby, please to meat you.” He held out his hand. Doc Selby was about fifty years old wore a dark coat over a white shirt. He had a rumpled black hat. Sean shook his hand. “Doc do you check the girls at Queenies, I was told you do on Saturdays. “ Sure do Sheriff, Gals have been pretty lucky, only a couple of doses of the usual diseases expected and some bruises from drunken customers.” Doc replied. Sean was glad of that and said” Anything out of the ordinary please let me know.” Doc held a small glass of whiskey up and said “Consider it done Sheriff.” How about a beer Cap?” Cap whose name was Chester Fremont use to be a Captain in the Union army during the great war of the stated had come to Prairie dog after the war and opened the saloon. “We have no ice sheriff!” The wine Sean had tonight had disagreed with him and a warm beer would be an improvement. “Sure thing Cap, I don’t mind.” When Cap brought him the beer Sean asked “Anything out of the ordinary happen the last few days?” Cap said “Sure thing Sheriff, couple of desperate types came in here and wanted to buy the place. “ “What did they look like?” Cap thought back and replied “One was a Mexican with a gold tooth and the other a man dressed in black with a hatband on his hat with silver around it.” “They offered me two hundred dollars and when I refused they became angry. “ They told me two hundred dollars was three times as much as a shithole like this is worth.” The Mexican emptied his drink on the bar and said “We will return gringo, you better reconsider.” He said the Mexican poured his whiskey on the bar and they left. Sean told him in the future he should come to the sheriff’s office and tell him or one of the deputies. Doc Selby told Sean he had seen those to when he went to Queenies last Saturday. “Mean looking customers Sheriff!” Do you know anything about Laura Lee Doc?” Sean was curious. “Well all I know is she is not one of the whores. “. Cartwright came upon her working in the dodge house in Dodge and offered her quite a sum to work at Queenies.” “She sure is a flower among the thorns up there.” Sean asked “Do you know about the back stairs outside Queenies?” Doc laughed. That’s for Prairie Dogs Respectable folks.” “Also do you know anything about the circuit judge that is around lately?” Doc rolled his eyes. That’s Calvin, He also came from Dodge the same time as Laura Lee.” “He is a disgrace to his profession, keeps liquored up and frequents the upstairs at Queenies.” Things were adding up Sean thought. A man Sean had seen at the new barber shop came in and sat at the table with the man who was asleep. “How about a game pops?’ The old man rubbed his eyes and set up his checkers. Cap said that’s Abe he is the new barber, and pretty good I hear. “Doc Added “I haven’t had anybody with cuts on their face lately!” The three laughed. Sean rubbed his face. “Maybe I will visit him tomorrow.” Well it is getting late, any problems let me know Cap.” Sean said hello to Abe and left

The Note

Sean arrived home that night and everyone was in bed. He took off his boots and walked softly up the stairs. He got beside Abigail’s room and was tempted to tap on the door. He put his ear to the door and heard nothing. He almost tapped and his knuckles were an inch from the door and he relented. He had to get some sleep. In the morning he was going to look for Cal and Wondered what Niabi’s people would do to him if he caught up to them... When He opened the door there was a note. Abigail must have slid it under before she wrote: Sean I missed you tonight. This Saturday there is going to be a social and a dance at the school house in the room used for meetings. There will be a picnic on the grounds before the dance at 1:00 pm. If you want to attend ladies make the picnic basket and I would love to make one for you. Leave a note under my door if you want to go. If you are going with someone else I won’t be upset, or if you have sheriff business I will understand and it was signed Abigail. Sean smiled and wrote a note saying. I got home late and got your note, I would be honored to go with you for the social and picnic. I will be going to Abe’s barbershop Saturday morning so you won’t be there with someone who looks like they just came off the trail, and he signed it Sean He softly went to her door and slid it under.

Table talk

The next day Sean was at the breakfast table and most of the discussion was about the town Social .Emma looked Sean and asked him if he or hid deputies were going. Sean hid a smile and just answered “I reckon!” He also said he would ask his deputies as one would have to remain on duty. Abigail, late as always came down the stairway yawning and said” Morning everyone!” Sean thought how refreshed she looked even after just waking up. Sitting at the great table Abigail gave Sean a wink when nobody was looking. Abigail asked Emma if her dress was ready. Emma told her she would bring it home this evening. Abe told Sean a couple of ‘bad ones had been showing up at the wild horse, Sean relayed to him that he was aware. Abe went on about that lay about Cal stealing a horse from Charlie’s Stable. Sean told him he was going after Cal this morning to bring him back to justice. Abe went on “You sure have been busy sheriff with all those shootings at the Last Chance and now horse thieving. Sean told him he would ask for more money and ammo at the next town meeting. Everyone including Abigail laughed. Abe went on “The undertaker should give you a dollar for every bad man you send to Hades. Abigail did not think that was funny and neither did Sean. Belle looked at Abe “Abe would you go with me to the social Saturday?” He said I might be old but I am not dead, sure will.” Sean Asked Emma if she was going and with who. Emma said” With a secret admirer Sean you will see.” Well it’s only Wednesday and I have time to go to the mercantile and get some duds. Sean added while looking at Abigail. Abigail, never one to hold back replied “hope you have a razor at the ready Sean, whoever you bring might want kiss.” Sean blushed. Sean finished his coffee and wished everyone a good day and went to the sheriff’s office.

Jailhouse Shovel

When Sean arrived at the jailhouse he saw a handbill on the bulletin board. It read ‘Ladies bring the man of your choice to the second annual town social and dance it will be at the town meeting hall this Saturday. The dance is at 1:00 pm. There will be a picnic before it and after the dance the mayor will have some words for you all. Sean went in and his deputies were looking over the prairie dog telegraph which was delivered along with the handbill. “It Says the Stage line is coming to Prairie Dog Flats next week. Charlie Curry will have fresh horses for it, supplied by the stage line Wells Fargo. Wells Fargo wants to hire someone for the stage office they are putting in the old saddle shop in the middle of town. Sean asked who would stay on Saturday at the office. Sandy said “I am staying, we flipped a silver dollar and Billy won.” Sean looked at Billy and asked if he had someone in mind.” I know it is ladies choice sheriff, but I am going out to Queenies and ask Laura Lee.” Sean warned him.” Wait for me Billy it’s not a good idea, I already lost a deputy and I will be dammed to lose another.” I will go with you tonight.” Billy put his hand on his six-shooter and responded “I can handle that Chad asshole and any other owl hoot they have hidden in the woodwork”. “Billy that tinhorn judge is in Cartwright’s pocket I need to be with you. “Ok Sheriff, but if any harm comes to Laura Lee there no one will stop me.” Billy asked “Sheriff Do you want me to go and help look under rocks for Cal?” Sean went to the closet that held supplies, and came out with a shovel. He went over and picked up a shotgun. Billy asked what the shovel was for. “No Billy I have to do this alone. And the shovel is, well put it this way, Cal isn’t coming back.” Billy and Sandy looked at each other. Billy only said one thing “whoa!” “Take care men.” and he left

Justice Served

Sean set off in the direction of the Arkansas River. He was no tracker but figured starting from the place he had reunited Hinan and Niabi would be a good place to start. He rode until he was at the tree grove he and Abigail had hidden from the Indians. He wondered if he would ever get use to being in the saddle so long. Trotting into the grove there was a sight that shocked him. There tied to a tree naked was what was left of Cal. Burnt embers were on the ground where a fire had been. Cal had been tortured, body mutilated and his privates were in his mouth, “Well Cal justice has been served.” Sean took the saddle off his horse and gave her some water.” “Rest Ellie.” He said to his horse and patted her mane. He took the shovel and dug a shallow grave near some brush. Cutting Cal down and laid him in the grave. He saw Cal’s hat and clothes and put them in there also. Sean covered the gravesite with stones and brush .He rested next to his horse and remembered holding Abigail in these same groves. After a half hour Sean saddled his horse and trotted from the grove. Then he saw on a ridge a lone Indian on a painted pony. It was Hinan sitting majestically on top of his horse. Hinan raised his lance towards the sky and yelled a whoop towards Sean. Sean raised his arm in the air as an acknowledgement. Hinan turned his steed and slowly rode off. Sean whispered “Go in peace my friend, go to Niabi. Sean said “let’s go Ellie”. And tapped his boots against the horses flanks, and rode towards town.

Jessie's Office

Jessie’s office was on the second floor of Queenies. There was a great desk at one end that Jessie used to interview employees and for meetings behind the desk on the wall was a picture of Ruby taken in Dodge. Jessie sat behind the desk with an oil lamp burning giving him an eerie look. Sitting in chairs around the desk were Joanquin, Chad, Judge Thomson and Slade. “Well Boys, The stage is coming to Prairie Dog and with that brings opportunity. I think we can all get rich beyond our dreams. Soon we will have the wild horse and if you come here and want a drink or a woman you will have to pay me. “Joanquin, are you getting some comancheros to help us get cattle to sell buyers from the east?” Si Amigo, they will here soon.” I am going to buy the old axe handle spread to keep them. “Jessie remarked. “ Chad, how is it going with the Wild horse saloon?” Chad shrugged his shoulders” I made them an offer three times what it is worth and the owner is being an asshole.” “Well offer him a little more and make it known saying no is not an option!” Jesse said while slamming his fist on the desk. Chad asked “What about the Sheriff and that damn deputy?” “All in time Chad, All in time““Judge come with me to the Axe handle and make everything legal in the morning.” The Judge burped then nodded. “Slade I am sending a whore I brought from Dodge to work at the last chance, if she gets real busy I will send another. “ Chad broke in “When the time comes that deputy is all mine!” “I would also like to straighten out that Laura Lee so she knows the rules.” “Chad one thing at a time, don’t start anything now.” Jessie said while pointing at Chad. Chad asked “What about Ruby she has been sweet talking the Sheriff, She knows too much and drink a lot. Jesse smiled “All in the master plan Chad.” then touched a finger to his temple. The Judge had a question “What about the mayor, won’t he catch on with the cattle and people we put pressure on”? Jessie grinned “Unless he wants Tillie to know about whom he is spending time with, He will keep silent.”

French Desire

Jessie got home late and silently went to his room he was about to open the door and a barefooted Abigail ran up behind him “Want some company Sean?’ She giggled. “Sure Abby come on in.
He went in and lit a lamp.” Abigail’s hair was let down and she had a French style evening gown on. “ What do you think? Emma got it for me. She had it for quite awhile. “She ordered it from a catalogue and picked it up in dodge.” It’s a French design all the way from Boston.” Sean winked. : It sure fits you just right Kitten.” He pulled her into his arms and they kissed. Did you catch up with cal?” “He had an accident on the trail, fell off his horse and broke his neck.” “Really?” Abby was skeptical. “Well that’s what the report will read” He said with a wink. She started taking off his clothes. “I have been waiting all night for you to come home. He got in the bed and she took off her gown “Don’t want to inkle it” and looked at him with passion in her eyes. She blew out the flame in the lamp and got in beside Sean. “Do you think anyone knows about us, well you know?” “Emma knows I told her, oh not about coming to your room. “ Abigail, Should I talk to your father?” “ Not yet Sean, but he is a smart man and will figure it out.” They talked until the early morning hours and fell asleep in each others arms.

Wells Fargo Man

It was eight am on a fine Thursday morning that the Wells Fargo Stagecoach came with the thunder of four team horses, the cracks of the drivers whip and hoots from the townspeople as it rode by. Driver and shotgun guard waving to everyone in view. It was a Grande sight indeed stirring up clouds of dust as it went directly to Charlie Curry’s stable. “Whoa!” Shouted the driver pulling on the reigns as it came to a halt. The driver got down and opened the coach door. Four men and two women ascended. The first introduced himself to Charlie who had run out of the stable to greet the stage. A man in easterner clothes and a derby hat said “You must be Charlie Curry, I am Douglas N. Puckett from Philadelphia representing Wells Fargo. “ “I am here to hire a depot man and see to it that you understand our needs” They shook hands. Charlie advised “As soon as I unhitch the team and coral them to cool off I will take you to the space bought by your office.” A man who said his name was Lawrence Caitlin remarked that he was a cattle buyer from Chicago who wanted to meet Tom Sutton on business, but first wanted to unpacked. Charlie pointed him to the Prairie Dog Hotel.” It’s nice enough, you must remember we are a growing community and there will be changes, Mr. Caitlin also had the clothes of eastern Dandy. A man in a dark frock coat and a wide brim hat announced he was Isaac Levy a man of the cloth who had come to Prairie Dog flats to save souls and wanted to know where the church would be. Charlie told him there was no real church but they had a town meeting house where besides having a school also housed a great room where they had town meetings and on Sunday religious meetings tended to by various town leaders. “Very well I will go with Mr. Caitlin to the hotel. Another man with a dark drooping mustache and dark coat and a fancy silk vest announced himself as James Drury a man of chance and wanted to know where a man might try his luck. Charlie told him where Queenies was and wished him luck; Drury headed towards the Prairie Dog hotel with a small bag in his hands. The two women, one whose name was Mrs. Sable, and requested to be called Ruth She had come from Dodge. She was a widow and wanted to open a kitchen here in Prairie Dog. Then Charlie saw her daughter whose name was Jasmine. Jasmine was in her early twenties, hair the color of golden wheat and the bluest eyes he had ever seen, “Please to meet you Mr. Curry!” Jasmine shook his hand. Charlie in a low voice told Mrs. Sable “You might want to try Belles rooming house as the Prairie dog Hotel had some cowpokes staying there whose manners were not so good. “ That’s why we left Dodge, despite a new marshal there questionable people roaming the streets. “Well we have a pretty good sheriff, along with a couple of deputies. Prairie Dog is a small enough town but with the stage and all people will be coming here and a kitchen would prosper. Mr. Caitlin asked where the mayor’s office and the sheriffs office was before he and the preacher also went to the hotel.

Jasmine

Breakfast at Belles was just ending when a knock came at the door. Belle opened it to see two woman and their bags. “I am Mrs. Sable and this is my daughter Jasmine and I was told I might find rooming here. Belle advised there was one more room if they both could take it as it had extra bedding. Mrs. Sable smiled and said Thank you very much, I will need it until I can have funds sent to the bank so I can have a small Kitchen built to service the community. “Come in Come in Please! Belle said with a cheery spirit. Come into other room and meet the other guest. They went into the other room and the borders greeted them.” That rascal over there is Abe; he has been in Prairie dog when it lived up to its name. “The Lady in the orange dress is Emma; she runs the towns dress shop.” The young lady with the lovely red hair is Abigail our teacher here about.” She looked towards Sean “and the handsome man with the star is Sheriff Sean O’Malley.” Jasmines eyes lit up “Glad to meet you Sheriff!” She warmly said. “You can call me Sean and it is rally nice to meet you Jasmine.” Abigail gave Sean an irritated look. “Sit down gals I will get you something” Belle knowing they must be hungry said. Sean Got up and held the chairs for Ruth and Jasmine to sit down. Abigail was steaming with jealousy. Sean said “the bank is small but has a sturdy vault and a guard that sleeps there.’ Well my husband, bless his soul use to run a kitchen in Dodge which I sold after he was killed in a card game at the Lone star saloon.” “I had to leave the town as there were bad memories.” Sean asked how the sheriff Charlie Bassett was. “Oh you haven’t heard he left office and the faro dealer a fellow name Earp is Deputy Marshall, it is said he wins too much at Faro to be an honest game. “ I will have to meet Mr. Earp whenever I travel to Dodge.” How did you come to Prairie Dog Mrs. Sable?” “By Stagecoach it was the first run here and I decided it was time to move on.” Belle exclaimed “Oh Good the stage has finally come, I will be able to order cloth without riding to Dodge to pick it up. “ “There are plenty of able bodied men to build the kitchen Mrs. Sable, I will ask around.” remarked Clem Coleman. Ruth’ will be fine Clem”Abe would ask at the Wildhorse when he went there today . Abigail asked” How was the trip Ruth?” “It was Bumpy and quite dusty, though the Wells Fargo man was easy on the eyes”. Ruth said with a wink “Well ladies I have to make my rounds of the town, see you all tonight.” Sean remarked as he stood up. Jasmine was fixated on Sean.” Jasmine sighed” it is so reassuring to have a real man as sheriff, and living here as well.” Abigail gulped .

The Letter

As Sean walked to Charlie’s Stable he saw people talking to each other. The stage was a big event for the town. “Good Morning Charlie!” Charlie was busy feeding and watering the stage team. “Hi Sean “and he nodded his head towards the stagecoach, “civilization has finally come to Prairie Dog’” The Sheriff went into the stable and saddled Ellie. He walked his horse out and stood beside the corral. “The Fargo man is seeing the mayor today and is staying at the hotel, a gambler is in town I thought you should know.” There are two fine ladies also. One about my age and her daughter, more your age Sean,” Oh Jasmine and her mother, I have met them.” Sean pictured Jasmine in his mind, then Abigail. “Prairie Dog has sure some great looking ladies in it.” Sean mused. Sean mounted and rode to his office. Sandy was asleep at the desk with a broom cradled in his arm. “Deputy, get up the jails on fire!” Sean shouted. Sandy fell backwards on the chair and went crashing on the floor. Sandy jumped up” Sheriff if was just closing my eyes to think’” Sean laughed. “I will be patrolling the town ‘” When Billy awakes Tell him I will be going out to Queenies this afternoon and I want him with me.” Bill started sweeping and answered.” Sure thing Sheriff, oh there are some new wanted posters came in with the new stage, also a letter from the Deputy Marshal. Sean looked at the wanted posters. There was a cattle rustler known as cutter, as he cut a cowman’s throat in dodge when he was recognized. He was wanted dead or alive for two hundred dollars. There was also one for the capture of a prostitute known as pearl; it was for fleecing one too many customers. Sean opened the letter. It read to the sheriff of Prairie Dog Flats, I have sent a couple of wanted posters on felons who have escaped justice here in Dodge. The prostitute I don’t care if I get her in my jail but if you see cutter I just as soon have him brought here in a pine box. Now that the stage line is running out your way some of our undesirables could be making the journey there by stage. If you have questions on anyone just send a message when the stage returns this way. They say the James gang has been sighted in Kansas so be on the watch. But they have been seen in a thousand other places. I hired a sheriff a Bat Masterson who is fearless and I am sure a lot of evil doers will be leaving our fine town. If you come to dodge look me up. Do you play Faro? And it was signed Deputy Marshall Wyatt Earp.” Sandy on this wanted poster, if you see this man Cutter, do not go near him, tell myself or Billy.” “ Sure thing Sheriff.

Tequila At Sunrise

Sean’s first stop was the Wild horse Saloon. There were more horses then usual tied up this early in the morning. Cal and Abe were talking with a couple of boys from town he recognized, probably about the construction of the kitchen. Two men at the bar turned around and greeted him. Hello Sheriff my name is Clyde and I drive for Wells Fargo and this is my guard slim. Slim was up to his name. Slim spit out some tobacco into a spittoon and said” Nice town you got here sheriff’” “Thank You” Sean replied “Lots of new faces everyday and with the stage we should grow fast.” The bartender advised Sean that he would be getting ice from Chan and will be making sandwiches. Sean noticed in a corner at a table two Mexicans sat staring his way.” Who are the Mexicans “he asked. “ Don’t know they rode in this morning and ordered tequila Sheriff.” Sean walked over to the table.” What are you doing in town boys” he asked. He noticed they were well armed and one had a large knife in his belt.” “Amigo we are looking for work.” Sean thought there was another Mexican looking for work in the last few days. “Do you know another Mexican named Joaquin?”” lots of Joaquin’s in Mexico Sheriff.” The Mexican with the knife said in broken English. Sean wished them luck getting a job and walked away. He could hear them laughing. Clem came over and whispered in Sean’s ear “I will back your play Sheriff and pointed to and old navy revolver tucked in his pants.” No need Clem, watches out you don’t shoot off you privates with that cannon.” Clem advised.” The wild horse sure has some desperate types coming in lately’” I would expect it at the lost chance but not here.” “I will have Billy stop by here more often Clem.” The Mexicans got up to leave. They left the money for the tequila on the bar, all the while smiling wide grins at Sean. After they left Clem remarked. “Should have plugged them for old glory and be done with it Sean.” Everyone laughed.

Luke

Sean arrived at the bank to see the banker Mr. Applebee .The bank was a brick building with bars on the windows. It was the most solidly built building in all of Prairie Dog Flats. The inside had a counter and a cage the teller Mr. Pullman sat in. Sitting over against the wall was the guard everyone called Luke. He had a double barrel shotgun lying across his lap. Sean asked the teller to announce to Mr. Applebee he wanted to see him. The teller went into the bankers and when he came out he told Sean to go in. “Morning Sheriff, what brings you here today. Sean sat down and told him of the desperate types that were being seen around town. “Think there will be trouble sheriff?” “Just make sure Luke keeps awake in his chair Mr. Applebee!” Mr. Applebee smiled “look sometimes takes his siesta before I catch him.” Has Mrs. Sable been here?” Sure have Sheriff and a fine woman she is.” She is expecting a cash box from Dodge on the next stage to be deposited in her new account.” “Oh! Sean reiterated “the usual sightings of the James gang have reached my office.” “If they come in here Luke will fill their brain pans with buckshot.” Sean ever skeptical” Just the same Mr. Applebee if you see any strangers hanging about let me know.” The Banker agreed and Sean left his office. On the way by he woke up Luke.

Mai Lee

Joaquin entered Chan’s and was staring at Chan’s daughter Mai Lee until Chan came out. Chan advised him he was early. Joaquin told him I have the money that’s all you need to know.” Where is Mr. Cartwright?’ Chan Lee asked.” He is busy, just give me the opium. Chan Lee smiled “Because of the demand my prices might go up next time.” Joaquin gave a grin” Not a smart Idea Hombre.” Chan went in back and Joaquin spoke to Mai. “Ah! Senorita, Joaquin knows how to treat the little flower.” and licked his lips. Mai Looked towards the floor as know one had ever talked to her that way. Joaquin reached over the counter and held her chin and lifted it so he could look into her eyes.” Joaquin would never hurt such a beauty.” Chan came out and Joaquin quickly let her go. “Here you have the usual, I will see you in two weeks.” Joaquin then turned to Mai “hasta que encontremos otra vez mi flor!” which meant “until we meet again my flower!” This desperado was smitten with the gentle and beautiful Mai. Mai Lee closed her eyes and gave a little smile. Chan noticed.

Texas Rose

Sean rode up to the last chance and a cowpoke that was standing outside ran inside. Inside he saw the cowpoke standing at the bar. Slade was behind the bar. “Just doing my morning patrol Slade.” There were several Mexicans sitting at tables along with a couple more cowboys he hadn’t seen. On the Mexican who usually carried the big knife in his belt sat a female. “Who’s the female Slade, I haven’t seen her around.” “She works here Sheriff. “ And just what does she do?” Well Slade went on “Anything she is paid to do. Sean walked over to the female and the Mexican. “What’s your name Miss?” Sean asked.“Would it be Pearl?” “Why no darling my name is Rose, I am known as Texas Rose.” The Mexican held her chin up” And she has all her teeth, well most of them.” “Well Rose or Pearl, I better not have any complaints or I will be back to see you.” “Ooh! That would be a pleasure.” She remarked. Sean noticed her eyes were strange. He had seen such eyes in addicts in Brooklyn. He looked at the Mexican and asked.” What are so many of Mexico’s finest citizens doing so far from the border?” “Looking for work sheriff, is that illegal?” Joaquin entered the saloon and said “usted está haciendo un dolor en el sheriff del asno! Which meant “You are becoming a pain in the ass sheriff”? “I don’t understand Spanish Joaquin, but I think you just disrespected me”. The Mexican at the table said” He says he is glad to see you sheriff.” Joaquin smiled and his gold tooth gleamed.” What is your name my friendly interpreter?” “Poncho Amigo, I am at your service.” There was some laughter at that. Sean brushed by Joaquin on the way out. Joaquin took one of the little packages he had and gave it to Slade. “It is for the woman senor Slade.” Sean was outside and wondered if he should write the authorities in Mexico and ask about these vaqueros.

An Arrest

That night Sean and Billy rode out to Queenies. The place was quite full. Jesse Cartwright was in the far room. Laura Lee was onstage singing. Billy wandered off into the far room. As soon as Laura Lee saw him she smiled and waved. Cartwright gave Billy a look of disdain. Chad was in the bar standing behind a game of poker. Ruby came over as soon as she saw Sean. “Buy a girl a drink cowboy?” She said serenely. “Oh hi Ruby how are things here tonight.” “Well Laura Lee has brought in a few more love sick customers which are always good for business. “ What will you have Ruby”? She looked at the barkeep and said whiskey please Dan and a cold beer for the sheriff.” I hear your husband bought a small ranch outside of town Ruby!”” He is always looking for business opportunities Sheriff.” Laura Lee and Billy came walking out after she talked with a few of her admirers. Ruby said” Let’s sit at a table.” A couple of the soiled doves came down and were circulating the rooms. As they sat Sean asked Laura Lee how things were going with her.” It is understood in here that they can look but cannot touch Sheriff.” Billy spoke up.” If you have problems with anyone just tell me Laura Lee...” She put her hand on his arm “I sure will Billy but Chad keeps them at bay.” And she smiled. Billy asked “Saturday there is a town social and I would love for you to go with me to it.”Well, she said I don’t know if I can get time to go.” Ruby sipped on her whiskey and spoke to Laura Lee.” “Honey I will talk to Jessie, you go and have a good time.” Do you think it will be alright for a dance hall girl to attend It.?” Ruby told her she was going with Jessie and they will be talking so much about that, it won’t matter.” They all laughed. Ruby asked Sean “Sean is you going with anyone?” Sean told her he was going with Abigail... ”You mean that school teacher person Sean?” “She is pretty but a little too tame for a man like you Sean.” Sean thought of the night of passion and laughed to himself.” “I can also be a teacher Ruby.” Ruby Remarked “I bet you can.” Billy asked if Laura Lee wanted anything.” Pick it out Billy.” Billy went to the bar and asked for another whiskey for Ruby, a cold beer for Sean and two Tequilas for Laura Lee and himself. They enjoyed each others company until a rough looking cowboy stood up from the faro table and told a man in a bright vest, he was cheating. Chad was making his way over and faced the man who now had his hands on his gun. Pay me tinhorn or it will be the last time you cheat someone. Sean walked up behind the man .He picked a bottle off a table and broke it over his head. The man half stumbled to the floor and Sean put his gun behind the now groggy mans ear. “Its over partner, a night in the jail will cool you off.” Chad was about to kick the man and Billy told him to back off. Sean told Billy to get the man under arrest horse and they would take him to jail. Ruby told Billy “I will make sure Laura Lee is at the social. Chad stared at Billy and Ruby told him to watch the other games. Outside the man said” Sheriff you dry gulched me. For your own good, I will look into the gambler next time I go there.” You can be my guest at the jail until morning and you cool down. When they got to the Jail Sandy was asleep on a cot and Billy brought the man to a cell.
Sean asked Billy when he came out” You really like Laura Lee don’t you Billy.”” I know I don’t stand a chance, but I will give it a try.” “Billy I want you to be careful around Chad.” There are a lot of strangers showing up and I need you. “Don’t worry Sheriff, on his best day I could drop Chad in his tracks.” Sandy was snoring and they both laughed.
“How is the kid doing with his shooting lessons?” Billy laughed again. He only drops the gun once an awhile, He should stick to brooms.” “Billy check on the stores before you turn in I am going home.” See You at the Social Sheriff’” Sandy wakes up tell him to let our customer out in the morning.” Billy nodded and Sean left.

Girl Talk

Sean arrived home and Jasmine was sitting in a chair reading a book.” Well hi Jasmine I thought you would be in bed by now.” I am just catching up on my reading Sheriff. “Just Sean Jasmine he exclaimed.” Are you going to the social tomorrow Jasmine?” “Well I don’t know anyone in town Sher er Sean, but my mother wants to go and meet folks...” Pretty lass like you will have boys at your feet. “Sean I want a man not a boy.” “Sean changed the subject”How’s the kitchen coming along?” She told him that they had enough people to build it and they start on Monday on a lot her mother purchased. A wagon with the holdings from the restaurant in Dodge should be coming from dodge in a wagon next week. ‘” My mother is a little worried about the bank thought.” “Why is that?” Well Mothers money is coming on the next stage in a strongbox and when she went to the bank the guard was asleep while folks were doing transactions.” Sean re assured her.” Tell your mother I will have another talk with Mr., Applebee the banker.” With the growth of the town he should get more help at the bank.” Sean you not hungry you missed dinner?” “I am leaving an empty stomach for the picnic before the social.” He rubbed his stomach and it growled Jasmine giggled. There was a patter on the stairs and they looked up. Abigail was coming down stairs in a robe. Hi Sean, I asked Belle if I could give you some pie when you came home and she told me I could. Abby went in another room and came back with a large piece of apple pie.” Well thank you Abigail that is kind of you. She put it on the table with a fork and knife. She looked at Jasmine and said “Hello Dear!” Jasmine smiled and went back to her reading. Abigail wasn’t about to leave and she sat down in a chair. Sean thought he never thought when he was in Brooklyn that he would be sitting at a table with two such stunning women who were giving him attention. They sat there within the glow of an oil lamp, there was very little talk. Sean finally yawned and told them it was going to be a very busy day tomorrow at the social and he wanted to get some sleep. He wished them good night and went to his room. Jasmine and Abigail talked for awhile and found the conversations interesting. Jasmine was well read and told her of being in a finishing school for girls back east for awhile. Abigail asked if she ever thought of teaching as she was so well spoken. Jasmine thought that was something she might like. “Well I will talk to the mayor Jasmine, I have too many students lately and the town really needs another teacher. It was strange to adversaries were getting along so well, in fact they were becoming to like each other. Finally Abigail got up and said” I am going to bed Jasmine, don’t forget to douse the flame after you are finished reading. Abigail went upstairs and Jasmine thought she heard a tapping on a door.

The Social

It was a beautiful Saturday the day of the social. Abe was up early and he thought he heard talk coming from Sean’s room...” Boy is letting the job get to him Abe thought
Cal was already downstairs. Soon some of borders were at the table. Cal told them he was offered the Wells Fargo managers position in Prairie Dog.” And I can sleep in the back room, so it will be goodbye to your fine rooming house. Belle told him how good a border he was and wished him well. Sean told him he would miss the tales of the war which were told at the dinner table. Jasmine came down and was beaming. Her mother followed a minute later. Belle told Sean to eat light as Abigail had a good picnic basket prepared. They heard a yawn and as usual Abigail looked radiant even this early in the morning. Sean told them of the arrest last night though he made certain not to mention Ruby. The men spent the morning telling stories and the woman helped Belle clean the house, which she was very pleased to have done. Early afternoon Sean went to the stable and took the Surrey he had arranged for and went back to Belles. He sat outside until Abigail dressed in the dress of a proper lady; basket in hand came to the surrey. Sean helped her up and thought she was the picture of a lady. Sean had shaved and put on clean clothes he picked up at Chan’s. Abigail told him he looked great in the derby he had arrived to Prairie Dog in. He asked about the broach she wore at the neckline. It was her mothers and she had given it to her when she moved to town; Sean gave the horse a slap with the reins and a Giddy up. They reached the schoolhouse and there were a few people in the shade some trees. Sean laid down a blanket and Abigail put the basket down, Sean had brought some wine he had saved in his room. There were chicken legs, pie and bread. They spent the afternoon there among the trees .Abigail wanted to know everything about Sean. She told him she was going to talk to the mayor later about having Jasmine teach school. She also told him her family was coming to the social. Billy rode up and they asked him to join him. There was a leg of chicken left and Billy told Abigail she was a good cook. Abigail laughed to herself as Belle had prepared the whole meal. Billy noticed Sean had shaved real close and chuckled “You sure look pretty boss.” Billy helped Sean un-harnessed the surrey horse and they brought it and Billie’s to the corral next to the school. People started riving for the social. Men and woman of all ages, some Sean had never seen before were arriving. Men were carrying musical instruments and there were more then a few jugs of corn whiskey. Everyone went through the schoolhouse to the town meeting hall. There was a counter at the entrance and a man was collecting all the firearms. Sean gave his holster but kept his little hideout gun. The hall was decorated and chairs and tables surrounded the center which would be used for dancing. A lot of friends showed up. Charlie Curry brought Jasmine and her mother. Belle arrived with Cal. The mayor with Tilley on his arm arrived and people clapped. The room soon became quite full. Abigail looked in disgust as Jesse Cartwright and Belle came in, followed by Laura Lee who was a vision. Abigail’s father came in with a banjo in one hand and a jug of shine in the other. Her Brothers came in on each side of her with there arms around hers. Four men started playing instruments and a portly man was calling a square dance. Sean told Abigail he was not much a dancer but would give it a try. Billy went over to Laura Lee and they talked before joining the dance.

Dance With Who You Came With

Tom Sutter motioned to Abigail to come over and she did bringing Sean along .”How are you doing Sheriff?” Sean shook his hand and said” I thought I would maim Abigail with my dancing sir” Abigail and her mother hugged. Abigail’s brothers then spotted Jasmine. They looked at each other then walked over to where Charlie Curry and the woman were. Tom offered Sean the brown jug he and his sons were drinking from. Sean took a drink and thought his throat was on fire. Abigail and her father laughed. To Sean’s amazement Abigail took it and took a big swallow, her eyes began to water.” Abigail’s a Sutter Sean. . ” Tom was pleased to say and they all laughed. Sean told Sean told them he wanted to check on his deputy and left them to their family gathering. Sean looked all around and found Billy and Laura Lee in a darkened corner in an embrace kissing. They did not see him and he left them alone.

Sean was on the way back to the Sutters when Ruby spotted him. “Hi Sean want to have the next dance?” She held his hand as to pull him into the middle of the dancers. ”Oh Ruby I am a terrible dancer I must decline. She told him He was the most handsome man there and made her heart flutter. She held his hand to her breast and said” Can you feel it?” Abigail took another drink from the jug and looked towards where Sean and Ruby were. She gave the jug to her father and said” Do you believe that Bitch Dad!” Abigail’s mother whispered in her ear” Kitten sometimes men need a little help staying on the right path.” And she then nudged her towards them. At that time the Belle was getting real close to Sean and he could smell he perfume. Sean looked over Ruby’s shoulder and there was Abigail, She had a few strands of hair loose and they were over one eye. Abigail put out her lower lip and blew the strands away. Sean advised Ruby she better go to her husband and nodded towards Abigail was a petite woman and Ruby was a head over her.”” Ruby this is a friend of mine Abigail.” Ruby smirked” You’re the school teacher, shouldn’t you be teaching something?” Abigail was feeling the whiskey now and becoming agitated.” Get your hands off him Bitch!” she had said it loud enough for people to hear. The Suttons along with Jasmine and her brothers came close.” “Give her what for sis” Hank shouted. Jasmine and Billy came over and Billy tried to grab Abigail by the arm and Tom told him to leave her alone. “Go find your husband and stay away from the other men!” Abigail was really getting angry.” Honey you have had to much to drink, you better run off before I have to spank you.” Ruby was getting tired of Abigail. Abigail closed her fist and said” I think you are the one who needs the lesson.” Ruby cursed and ran towards Abigail when Jasmine stuck out her foot and said “Whoops!” Ruby toppled to the floor and Abigail jumped on top of her. They rolled on the floor Ruby trying to pull Abby’s hair and Abigail swinging her fist. Sean went to stop them and Tom stopped him.” Kitten use to fight tooth and nail with her brothers Sean she can handle it.” Sean told him that being the sheriff he could not let this take place. Billie and Sean separated the two. What there was of the top of Rubies dress was torn and she had a bruise under her eye. Ruby loudly said” Sean doesn’t seem to mind Miss Teacher.” Abigail with more of her hair in her eyes replied” Well I mind and you better keep your hands off him.” Jesse Cartwright grabbed Ruby and told her they better go. As they went to the door Ruby turned and cursed Abigail and promised to return the favor.
